Our Guide to Waxing
What is waxing? A form of semi-permanent hair removal that works by removing the hair from the root (rather than at the skin’s surface as with shaving or creams), to leave the area hair-free for between two and six weeks. With regular waxing, the interval between waxing lengthens, and the rate of re-growth is noticeably reduced.
How long before my holiday or special event should I get waxed? A day or two before; any redness normally takes no longer than 24 to subside, even on sensitive skin.
What is the difference between hot wax and strip wax? Strip wax is removed with a cloth strip; it adheres to the skin so it’s better for fine hair removal. Our waxing specialists use strip wax for large areas such as legs and arms.
Hot wax holds onto the hair, rather than the skin, resulting in less skin irritation and making it ideal for coarser hair like the underarm and bikini line. The temperature of the hot wax also makes for easier hair removal by opening up the pores and follicles, leaving a cleaner neater finish. We recommend you hot wax for bikini and underarm services and only use hot wax for facial hair removal.
How should I prepare for my waxing treatment? Gently exfoliate and moisturise 2-3 days before your treatment to prepare the skin and remove the dead skin cells. Avoid using any body oils on the day of the treatment and do not use a sun bed or solarium for two days prior to the appointment; this will sensitise the area.
How much hair growth do I need to have for a waxing service? 4mm long is ideal. If you’ve waxed previously leave it to grow for 4 weeks. If you’ve been shaving leave it to grow for 2 weeks or longer.
What underwear should I wear? Underwear is kept on for Bikini and Extended Bikini waxes; we suggest you don’t wear your best underwear as they may be soiled with talc or wax. For Brazilian or Hollywood waxing underwear is removed.
Is waxing painful? The waxed area may ‘smart’ but any pain is instant so you won’t normally feel discomfort after you leave. If you are tired, run down, due your period or have a hangover you might feel more sensitive. If you are concerned, take a paracetamol half an hour before your appointment.
What happens during the treatment? You are required to confirm that your suitability for waxing and that you have no conditions that preclude you from having the service.
The area to be waxed is cleansed with a pre-waxing lotion to remove any products that may stop the wax sticking to the hair. For hot wax services, a thin layer of pre-wax oil is applied to prevent the wax from sticking to the skin.
Wax is applied and the therapist will remove the hair in sections until the area is hair free; any stray hairs are plucked out with a tweezers.
The skin to be waxed may have to be pulled taught and you may be asked to assist the therapist. You may also be asked to change positions during the treatment. Once the hair removal is complete a cleansing and aftercare lotion is applied to to soothe and moisturise the area.
What about immediate aftercare? The pores are open after waxing so avoid anything that would irritate the area or encourage bacteria for 24 hours e.g. exposure to sun, deodorant, highly perfumed lotions, very hot showers, swimming pools, saunas, spas, strenuous exercise (sweating) and sun beds.
How do I avoid ingrown hairs? Keep the area moisturised and exfoliate 1-2 weeks after being waxed and once or twice a week maximum thereafter; this will enable the hair to break through the skin easily and avoid ingrown hairs. Use Aveda Outer Peace TM Blemish Relief Pads or Aveda Smoothing Body Polish. Avoid shaving the area as this will strengthen the roots and ruin your efforts to reduce hair regrowth.
When will I need to wax again? Hair growth is individual but most people wax every 4-6 weeks; at 3 weeks there is typically not enough regrowth to wax, at more than 6 weeks long hairs are easily broken, resulting in secondary regrowth and less longevity of the waxing service.
Can I have a bikini wax when I am on my period? Yes; you will need to wear a freshly changed tampon before going into your treatment. Feel free to freshen up in our bathroom beforehand.
Will the therapist be male or female? All our therapists are female.
Are there circumstances in which waxing is unsuitable? If you have a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis waxing may not be appropriate. This may also be the case if you are taking medication that thins the skin. We suggest you check with your GP beforehand.
